Święta Lipka: a baroque sanctuary in Warmia
Święta Lipka lies between Kętrzyn and Reszel, on Lake Dejnowa. The sanctuary, with its baroque basilica and cloisters with corner chapels, has been a Monument of History in Poland since 2018. It is famous for its organ with moving figures, built between 1719 and 1721, and for its richly decorated interior.
It is a place of pilgrimage and popular with tourists, so it is worth agreeing wedding dates, the rules for taking photos in the church and the times of ceremonies directly with the sanctuary, as early as possible.
Light in a baroque interior
Baroque interiors are full of gilding, colourful paintings and dark wood, and light comes in through tall windows and mixes with the warm light of the lamps. The gold reflects on the skin with a warm glow, and the whole scene is rich and colourful.
In surroundings like these, makeup that is too soft gets lost, and shades that are too cool look grey. That is why I warm up the complexion slightly, sculpt the face gently and define the eyes, so that they are clearly visible even from the back pews. I mattify the T-zone, because in the dim light of a church any shine looks like a patch in photos.
Photos in church
In many churches photographers work without flash or with restrictions, and the interior can be darker than it seems. The photos are then taken at a higher camera sensitivity, which slightly flattens the features and weakens colours. Slightly more defined brows, lashes and lips help keep the face from disappearing against the rich interior.
Agree the rules for photography in the basilica with the sanctuary and pass them on to your photographer. I will adapt the makeup to whether the photos are taken with or without flash.
The organ, music and emotions
Organ music in a baroque interior can move even people who rarely cry. That is why on the wedding day I use waterproof mascara, long-wearing eyeliner and well-set skin under the eyes. During the ceremony the maid of honour should have tissues in her bag, and straight after the congratulations I will refresh your makeup, because with the bridal package I stay with you all day.
Which makeup suits a baroque basilica
Classic elegance works best: glowing but not shiny skin, softly blended browns or warm beiges on the eyelids, defined lashes and lips in a rose, nude or raspberry shade. This kind of makeup suits a rich interior and does not compete with it. Let us save glitter and very strong colours for the reception, if they are to appear at all.
I also match the makeup to the dress. With lace and long sleeves a more classic version looks good, while with a simple, plain dress bolder lips can be a strong accent.
Travel and a preparation plan
It is about 45 km from Giżycko to Święta Lipka, roughly a 45-minute drive via Kętrzyn. The preparations can take place at home, in a hotel or at a farm stay near Kętrzyn or Reszel. I come to wherever you are getting ready, with a full kit of cosmetics and my own lighting.
In the season Święta Lipka can be busy with pilgrims and tourists, so it is worth allowing extra time in the plan for the day for the drive and parking. Plan about an hour for each person’s makeup, and I do the bride last, so that her makeup is the freshest.
The season and a cool interior
The thick walls of baroque churches mean it can be cool inside even in summer, and cold in winter. For a wedding between autumn and spring, it is worth thinking about a bolero, a cape or a dress with sleeves, and the maid of honour should have a lip balm in her bag. The cold emphasises redness and bluish shadows under the eyes, so I even out the skin tone more carefully and add warmth to the complexion.
In summer, on the other hand, the heat in the car and outside contrasts with the coolness inside. Then I mattify the T-zone and set the makeup well, so that it does not look shiny when you walk into the church. It is best to put the dress on just before leaving and to sit carefully in the car, so as not to crease the fabric.
A wedding photo session nearby
The area around Święta Lipka makes a good backdrop for photos: lake shores, wooded hills, and a few kilometres away Reszel with its castle and old town, and Kętrzyn with its Teutonic castle. When planning an outdoor session, check the time of sunset. In June the sun sets here at around 9:10 pm, and in mid-January at around 3:45 pm.
