Castle interiors and makeup
Castle interiors with thick walls can be darker than a modern hotel, and in the evening the rooms are lit with warm, yellowish light. It looks beautiful, but it changes how makeup is perceived:
- Warm light flattens the features. I sculpt the face a little more and do not skip the blush, so that the complexion does not look flat.
- Colours lose intensity. Cool, very pale shades on the lips and eyelids almost disappear in yellow light, so I choose shades with slightly more depth.
- Flash. In dark rooms the photographer often uses flash. I choose products that do not create a pale cast on the face in flash photos.
That is why, for a castle wedding, we check the makeup trial not only by the window but also in warm artificial light. The trial is included in the price of the bridal package.
Getting ready in a castle room
If the bride is staying at the castle, I do her makeup in the hotel room. I need a spot by the window, and when there is little daylight, I use my own neutral-coloured lighting. Let me know whether the room is in the castle itself or in the building next to it, and where I can park.
Historic corridors and staircases make the walk from the room to the ceremony longer, so it is worth allowing a few extra minutes in the plan for the day. If I am also doing makeup for your mum, maid of honour or bridesmaids, we set the order so that the bride is ready with time to spare.
A photo session in the courtyard and by the lake
The castle’s light facade, red roof, cobbled road to the gate and old trees are the backdrop photographers love most in Ryn. The white walls reflect light like a reflector, so the face is well lit. Against such a bright background, more defined eyes, brows and lips look better: makeup that is too soft easily gets lost in the frame next to a white facade and a white dress.
Ryn lies between two lakes, and the town also has a historic windmill, so you can take photos in several completely different places in a short time. The cobblestones can be uneven, so a more comfortable pair of shoes comes in handy for the session.
Which makeup suits a castle wedding
The castle itself is a rich decoration, so elegant but not overdone makeup works best. Most often I suggest:
- glowing but not shiny skin,
- a softly smoky eye in warm browns, or a thin line of eyeliner,
- lips in a nude with a little depth, a pink, or a warm red if it suits the dress,
- more defined brows, which frame the face nicely in a dim interior.
If you choose a vintage-style or lace dress, we can add a classic touch, for example retro-style eyeliner. We check everything at the trial.
A sample plan for a castle wedding day
At a castle wedding the preparations, the ceremony and the reception are often in one place, but a historic building needs a little more time for getting from one place to another. An example for a 4 pm ceremony with makeup for the mother of the bride, the maid of honour and the bride:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 11:30 | I arrive and set up my station with lighting |
| 11:45 | makeup for the mother of the bride |
| 12:45 | makeup for the maid of honour |
| 13:45 | makeup for the bride |
| 15:00 | touch-ups, photos of the preparations, the dress |
| 15:30 | a session in the courtyard or in front of the castle, going to the ceremony |
I adapt the plan to the work of the hairdresser and the photographer. If the ceremony is in a church, we add time for the journey.
A castle wedding in autumn and winter
Ryn Castle is a good place for an off-season wedding: thick walls, warm light and cosy rooms mean that the cold outside only adds atmosphere. The days are short, though: in December the sun sets here at around 3:15 pm, so we take the outdoor photos early and spend the rest of the day in the castle interiors.
In winter the skin is drier because of frost and central heating, so I hydrate it more before makeup and choose products that do not emphasise dry patches. Deeper lip colours look beautiful with winter outfits, for example with a wrap or a cape: wine, plum or a warm red.
The colour of your dress and makeup in castle light
In the warm light of the castle rooms, the colour of the dress looks different than in the bridal shop. A snow-white dress can look slightly bluish, while ivory and champagne become warmer and more golden. I match the makeup to that shade:
- with snow white, clean pinks and cooler nudes look good,
- with ecru and ivory, peaches, warm beiges and soft browns work well,
- with champagne and gold accessories, a golden note on the eyelids and warm lips are a good choice.
Bring a fabric sample or a photo of the dress taken in daylight to the trial. That makes it easier to choose the foundation and lip shade, so that your face does not stand out from the dress, either in person or in photos.
Makeup for a long evening
Castle weddings usually go on late into the night. The makeup has to survive the ceremony, dinner, the first dance and the party, plus photos by candlelight and with flash. I rely on long-wearing products, thin layers and careful setting.
With the bridal package I stay with you all day, so between the ceremony, the photo session and the reception I refresh your makeup as we go. For the ceremony, it is worth putting a lipstick in the shade from your makeup, blotting papers and tissues in the maid of honour’s bag. Frequently asked questions
Do you come to Ryn Castle?
Yes. Ryn is about 20 kilometres from Giżycko. I come to your room at the castle or to wherever you are getting ready.
Does the makeup trial take the castle light into account?
Yes. At the trial we check the makeup by the window and in warm artificial light, similar to the light in the castle rooms.
Which lip colour suits a castle wedding?
Most often a nude with a little depth, a pink or a warm red. Very pale, cool shades can look washed out in the yellow light of the interiors.
Does booking require a deposit?
Yes, for the bridal package. I book the date once we have agreed the terms of our cooperation individually and you have paid a deposit of the agreed amount. The deposit counts towards the total price of the service.
Is a winter wedding at the castle a good idea?
Yes, the castle interiors are very atmospheric in winter. Just remember that the days are short: in December the sun sets in Ryn at around 3:15 pm, so we do the outdoor session early.
