The key rules of wedding guest makeup

Good wedding makeup is makeup in which you feel like yourself, just in a festive version. A few principles I follow:

  • Elegance, not competition. It is the bride’s day, so a guest can have striking makeup, but nothing so dramatic that it draws more attention than the wedding dress.
  • Long wear all day and night. A Polish wedding often lasts from the afternoon until morning: the ceremony, congratulations, dinner, dancing and the oczepiny, the traditional midnight games. The makeup has to survive all of it.
  • Photos. Guests are photographed too, often with flash. That is why I make sure the skin does not look shiny in photos and that the eyes are slightly more defined.
  • Comfort. Makeup should not get in the way of eating, talking and dancing, so I choose light layers and comfortable lip products.

How to match makeup to the colour of your dress

The colour of your dress is the best starting point. A few tried and tested combinations:

  • Navy, bottle green, burgundy. Warm browns and gold on the eyelids, lips in a nude or raspberry shade. Deep dress colours carry more defined eyes well.
  • Pastels: powder pink, light blue, lavender. Soft pink and peach shades, glowing skin, lips in a colour close to natural.
  • Red. Either lips in the same tone as the dress, or neutral lips and more defined eyes. Two strong reds at once, on the dress and on the lips in a different shade, rarely look good.
  • Black. The classic: eyeliner or a smoky eye with nude lips, or a thin line of eyeliner with red lips.
  • Patterns and florals. I pick one colour from the pattern and repeat it subtly in the makeup, for example on the lips.

Have a photo of your dress and accessories ready for our appointment. Jewellery matters too: warm shades look better with gold earrings, cooler ones with silver.

A daytime, evening or outdoor wedding

A 3 pm ceremony outdoors by the lake and a reception in a venue until morning are two completely different kinds of light. I create wedding makeup so that it looks good in both:

  • in daylight it must not look heavy, so I apply foundation thinly and keep the stronger accent for the eyes or lips,
  • in the evening, under the artificial light of the venue and with flash, the same makeup looks softer, so I am not afraid of more defined brows and lashes,
  • for an outdoor wedding I mattify the T-zone and set everything well, because sun and wind by the water quickly put makeup to the test.

Long wear is above all about skin preparation and choosing products for your skin type. Oily skin needs mattifying primers, dry skin needs hydration so that foundation does not emphasise dry patches. Add thin layers, waterproof mascara and setting at the end.

It is worth taking these in your bag to the wedding:

  • a lipstick in the shade from your makeup,
  • blotting papers instead of powder added several times,
  • cotton buds for small touch-ups under the eyes.

That really is enough. Well-prepared makeup does not need anything more all evening.

Makeup for the maid of honour

The maid of honour stands right next to the bride in the photos during the vows, the congratulations and the oczepiny. Her makeup should be elegant and long-lasting, but it should also look good alongside the bride’s makeup. It is best when both have a similar feel: if the bride has chosen a natural glow, the maid of honour can have slightly more defined eyes or lips, but without a strong contrast.

The maid of honour is also the person who carries the touch-up kit all day. It is worth having the bride’s lipstick, blotting papers, cotton buds and tissues in it. If the maid of honour is getting ready together with the bride, I do her makeup in the same place, before the bride’s.

A summer or autumn wedding in Masuria

In summer, weddings in Masuria often start outdoors and then move to a venue by the lake. Heat and dancing make the skin shine, so in summer I mattify the T-zone more and choose lighter products. In the evening it gets cool and damp by the water, and mosquitoes appear on the terrace: apply repellent to your body, away from your face.

In autumn and winter, guests usually wear warmer, deeper colours. Browns, copper, plum and wine-coloured lips suit them. The skin is drier at that time, so I focus on hydration and cream products.

Makeup for the day-after party

In Masuria, poprawiny, the party on the day after the wedding, is still a popular tradition, often in a garden or by the lake, in a more relaxed atmosphere. Makeup for poprawiny can be lighter than for the wedding: fresh skin, a touch of blush, mascara and lip gloss. After a sleepless night, hydration and brightening the eye area matter most.

If you would like me to come on the second day too, tell me when you book. This makeup is quicker, so it is easy to fit into the plan for the day.

Makeup at your place before the wedding

I come to you before you leave for the wedding: to your home, a hotel or a guesthouse. I work in Giżycko, Mikołajki, Mrągowo, Ryn and throughout Warmia and Masuria. All I need is a spot by a window, a chair and a small table for the cosmetics.

It is worth planning about an hour per person. If several people are getting ready for the wedding, for example your mum, sister and a friend, I can do everyone’s makeup one after another; we will set the start time so that everyone is ready on time. You will find more about this service on the occasion makeup page.
