Which prom makeup to choose

The most beautiful makeup is the kind that shows you, not just the cosmetics. A prom is an evening ball, so you can allow yourself more than every day, but still in moderation. Most often I suggest one of three directions:

  • Glow. Glowing skin, a peach blush, shimmering eyelids and lip gloss. Light and fresh, it suits pastels and light dresses.
  • Elegant classic. A thin line of eyeliner, defined lashes and nude or red lips. A timeless choice for black, navy and red.
  • A smoky eye. Browns, plum or graphite on the eyelids and soft lips. Striking with simple, plain dresses.

The rule is simple: strong eyes or strong lips. The combination of both rarely looks good in close-up photos.

Makeup and the colour of your dress

The colour and fabric of the dress tell me a lot. Sequins and silver go well with cooler, metallic accents on the eyelids, gold and beige with warm browns. With a dress in a strong colour, for example red or cobalt, the makeup should complement it, not compete with it.

Have a photo of your dress, shoes and jewellery ready for our appointment. If you have inspiration, for example photos from Instagram, I am happy to see it and adapt it to your features.

Long wear: the polonaise, photos and dancing until morning

A studniówka usually begins in the evening with the polonaise, a traditional opening dance, and ends in the early hours. Add flash photos, emotions and a warm hall. That is why:

  • I prepare the skin carefully and choose a primer for its type,
  • I apply thin layers of foundation, so that the skin looks natural up close,
  • I mattify the T-zone, because in flash photos shiny skin looks oily,
  • I choose waterproof mascara and, if you like, apply individual lashes, which add definition without looking artificial,
  • finally, I set the makeup.

A lipstick in the shade from your makeup and blotting papers in your bag are enough.

How to prepare your skin before the prom

Teenage skin can be unpredictable, and pre-ball stress does not help. A few tips for the last weeks:

  • moisturise your skin regularly and do not test new cosmetics just before the ball,
  • do not squeeze spots the day before: the redness after squeezing is harder to conceal than the spot itself,
  • have your brows shaped or tinted a few days before the prom, not on the day,
  • on the day of the ball, wash your face and apply a light moisturiser, with no foundation or powder.

If you struggle with acne, do not worry. I choose products that even out the skin tone and cover imperfections, but without a heavy mask.

A plan for prom day

On the day of the prom, it is best not to leave anything until the last minute. It is worth planning the makeup so that it is ready about an hour before you leave: then there is time to get dressed, take photos with your family and travel calmly. An example when the polonaise starts at 7 pm:

A sample preparation plan for a prom with the polonaise at 7 pm
TimeWhat happens
13:00hair, if you have it done before the makeup
15:30I arrive and start the makeup
16:30touch-ups, putting on the dress
17:00photos with your family before leaving
18:00leaving for the venue

We agree on the order of hair and makeup in advance. If the hairdresser comes to your home, we can work one after the other, so that nobody waits.

Prom photos: flash, phones and the mirror

A prom leaves hundreds of photos: from a professional photographer, from phones, in front of the bathroom mirror. A few things help the makeup look good in all of them:

  • with flash, shiny skin looks oily, so I mattify the T-zone and keep the glow on the cheeks,
  • some powders and cosmetics with mineral filters can create a pale cast in flash photos, so I choose products that are tried and tested on camera,
  • a phone camera smooths and brightens, so soft eye makeup can disappear: slightly more defined lashes and brows solve this problem,
  • during the night, two or three quick touch-ups are enough: a blotting paper and lipstick.

Lashes for the prom: mascara, individual lashes or a strip

Lashes make a huge difference in photos, especially with flash. There are three options:

  • Mascara alone. The most natural effect. It is enough if you have thick, long lashes and choose soft makeup.
  • Individual lashes. Applied in a few places, most often in the outer corners. They add definition and optically lift the eyes, and look natural up close.
  • Strip lashes. The strongest effect, good for bold evening makeup. Their length needs to be matched to the eye.

If you have lash extensions, tell me in advance. I will then choose products that do not weigh them down.

When to book prom makeup

In prom season many schools hold their balls on the same weekends, so dates run out quickly. Write to me as soon as you know the date of the ball. I book the date once I confirm it by email or text message, with no deposit.

I come to your home, so you can get ready calmly, without travelling between salons. If several friends are getting ready together, I can do your makeup one after another; it is worth planning about an hour per person. You will find more information on the occasion makeup page.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book prom makeup?

As early as possible once you know the date of the ball. In January and February many schools hold their proms on the same weekends.

Will you come to my home before the prom?

Yes. I come to homes in Giżycko, Mrągowo, Kętrzyn, Pisz and the surrounding area. I can also do makeup for several friends one after another.

Will the makeup last all night?

Yes. I prepare the skin carefully, choose long-wearing products and set the makeup. For touch-ups, a lipstick and blotting papers are enough.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

No. I book the date once I confirm it by email or text message, and I do not take a deposit.

How long before leaving should prom makeup be done?

Ideally so that it is ready about an hour before you leave. That leaves time for the dress, photos with your family and a calm journey.
